SASSA SRD Appeal Guide
If your SASSA SRD application was declined and you believe the decision was incorrect, you have the right to submit an appeal. Learn how to appeal step-by-step.

Before You Appeal
Check your decline reason
View your status to see the exact reason for the decline.
Verify your personal information
Ensure your ID number, phone number, and banking details are correct.
Gather supporting documents
Collect any proof that supports your appeal (e.g., UIF statement, payslips).
Confirm you are within the appeal window
Appeals can only be submitted during the official appeal period for each month.
How to Submit an Appeal
Visit the SASSA Appeal Portal
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and navigate to the appeals section. You can also go directly to the DSD appeals website.
Enter Your Details
Provide your South African ID number and the cellphone number linked to your SRD application.
Verify with OTP
Click 'Send Pin' to receive a one-time PIN on your registered phone. Enter the OTP to verify your identity.
Select the Month to Appeal
Choose the specific month for which you want to appeal. You can only appeal within the official appeal window for that month.
Provide Appeal Reason
Select or explain why you believe the decline decision was incorrect. Be specific and honest in your appeal.
Submit Your Appeal
Review all information and submit your appeal. Save your appeal reference number for tracking.
Appeal Status Outcomes
Your appeal is under review. The appeal process can take up to 90 days.
Your appeal was successful. Payment will be processed for the appealed month.
Your appeal was unsuccessful. The original decision stands for that month.
Common Decline Reasons and What to Do
What this means:
SASSA detected that you may have income above the R624 threshold.
What to do:
If this is incorrect, gather proof that you do not have income and submit an appeal.
What this means:
You are registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund.
What to do:
If you are not receiving UIF benefits, get a letter from the Department of Labour and appeal.
What this means:
You are registered as receiving NSFAS funding.
What to do:
If you are no longer funded by NSFAS, get proof and submit an appeal.
What this means:
Records show you may be employed by a government entity.
What to do:
If this is incorrect, get a letter from your alleged employer confirming you do not work there.
What this means:
Your details could not be verified with the Department of Home Affairs.
What to do:
Ensure your ID document is valid and your details are correct. Visit Home Affairs if needed.
What this means:
You are already receiving another SASSA social grant.
What to do:
If you only receive the Child Support Grant, you can still qualify - submit an appeal.
Appeal Timeline
Processing Time
Appeals can take up to 90 days to be processed and reviewed.
Check Regularly
Monitor your appeal status regularly using the official appeal status check tool.
One Appeal Per Month
You can only submit one appeal per declined month. If declined again, you cannot appeal again for that same month.
If Your Appeal is Declined
If your appeal is declined and you still believe the decision is incorrect:
- You may challenge the decision through the courts, including the High Court
- Seek legal assistance from organizations that provide free legal aid
- Contact SASSA directly to understand the specific reasons for the decline
Note: A declined appeal for one month does not affect future SRD applications. Each month is assessed separately.
